Scared to start the gym? Here’s what I’d do on day one
If walking into a gym makes your stomach flip, you’re not the only one. Loads of people feel exactly the same — including plenty of the regulars you’re worried about.
Here’s what I’d do if I was starting again.
1. Go when it’s quieter
Mid-morning or later in the evening is usually calmer while you find your feet. You’re allowed to ease in.
2. Walk in with a plan
Write 3–4 exercises on your phone before you leave the house. Then you’re never stood there wondering what to do next.
3. Start with what you know
A walk on the treadmill and a couple of machines is a proper start. Nobody’s judging. Most people are too busy thinking about their own session.
4. Learn the basics before you chase the fancy stuff
Full body, two or three times a week, beats a complicated split you’ll quit by Friday. Add a little each week. Sleep and protein matter more than the perfect Instagram workout.
5. Talk to yourself like you’d talk to a mate
Missing one session doesn’t make you lazy. It makes you human. Just get the next one done.
The nerves fade every time you turn up. Progress beats perfection — and nobody gets left behind.
