Personal Training in Carlisle

Friendly, no-judgement coaching in Carlisle and across Cumbria, for beginners, returners and anyone who wants a plan that actually fits their life.

Hi, I'm Mateusz

I'm Mateusz Rys, a personal trainer and online coach based in Carlisle, and I've been coaching for over 11 years. I've worked with complete beginners who were nervous about walking into a gym, people getting back into it after years off, and regulars who've hit a plateau and want some structure.

My approach is simple: get the fundamentals right, build habits you can keep, and make training something you look forward to rather than dread. No fads, no shouting, no pretending you need to train six days a week to see results.

Where we train

Most of my in-person sessions take place at Train To Thrive in Carlisle. It's a welcoming gym with everything we need for strength, mobility and conditioning work, without the intimidating atmosphere some big gyms have.

Alongside one-to-one sessions, I run small group sessions each week:

  • Saturday โ€“ the main group session
  • Tuesday โ€“ Foundation (a great starting point if you're new)
  • Thursday โ€“ the Thursday Thriller

Beginners are genuinely welcome at every session. Everyone starts somewhere, and the hardest part is usually just walking through the door.

Who personal training is for

Personal training in Carlisle with me is a good fit if you:

  • feel nervous or out of place in the gym and want someone in your corner
  • have tried to get fit before but struggled to stay consistent
  • want to get stronger, move better and feel more confident in your body
  • are busy and need a plan that fits around work and family
  • want to lose a bit of fat or build muscle without crash diets or extreme routines
  • would like proper coaching on technique so you train safely

You don't need to be fit to start. That's what the sessions are for.

What sessions look like

Every session is built around you. We'll work on strength training, mobility and fundamental movement patterns like squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling and carrying, plus some cardio. I'll adjust things as you go, so it's always challenging but never overwhelming.

Before we start, we'll have a chat about your goals, your history and anything that might get in the way. That's what my free Movement Discovery is for. It's a relaxed first session where we work out where you are now and what a realistic plan looks like.

Not local? Online coaching

If you're not in Carlisle, or you'd like support between sessions, I also coach online. You get a personalised plan, regular check-ins and access to a supportive community, wherever you are in the UK. My DLK memberships are designed for exactly this. You can explore the DLK memberships here.

Prefer to start on your own?

If you're not ready for coaching yet, that's completely fine. My plain-English guides cover everything from your first weeks in the gym to protein, sleep and training when life gets busy. I also share free tips on the Educational Content blog. Scared to start the gym? is a good place to begin. You can also join the newsletter for the odd useful tip in your inbox.

Your first workout's on me

If you're thinking about personal training in Carlisle, the easiest next step is a conversation. No pressure, no hard sell. Just a chat about where you are and where you'd like to be.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be fit before I start personal training?

Not at all. Most people I work with start as beginners or are coming back after time off. Sessions are pitched at your level and built up gradually.

Where do personal training sessions take place in Carlisle?

In-person sessions run at Train To Thrive in Carlisle, including weekly small group sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

How much does personal training cost?

It depends on how often you'd like to train and whether you choose one-to-one, small group or online coaching. Your first workout is free, so get in touch and I'll talk you through the options.

Can I train with you if I don't live in Carlisle?

Yes. Online coaching gives you a personalised plan, check-ins and community support wherever you are in the UK.

I'm nervous about the gym. Is that normal?

Completely. Loads of people feel the same, including plenty of regulars. Have a read of Gym Confidence for Beginners. Then come along when you're ready. Nobody's judging.

If you have a medical condition, injury, are pregnant or haven't exercised in a long time, please check with your GP before starting a new training programme. Personal training is not a substitute for medical advice.
